Jack Midson brought Oxford United a famous FA Cup victory over League One Yeovil Town at the Kassam Stadium.

The former Histon striker pounced ten minutes into the second half after great work by skipper Adam Murray and Matt Green.

Murray held off two opponents and then picked out Green in the centre forward position, Green forced the ball to the left, and Midson reached it ahead of goalkeeper Richard Martin and lobbed it into the goal from 15 yards.

Chris Wilder kept the side unchanged from the Altrincham game, with Midson again up front alongside James Constable and Matt Green, and Jamie Cook, as expected, joining others on a strong-looking seven-man bench.

Yeovil didn't take long to show their League One pedgigree. Quick in thought, they moved the ball smartly going forward, and gave little space to Oxford's strikers at the other end.

The visitors forced the first corner in the fourth minute, and it was a dangerous inswinging one that caused some alarm.

The U's responded with a Damian Batt long throw, nodded back by Luke Foster, which Constable almost reached just ahead of the keeper.

And when Constable knocked the ball forward, after a clever dinked pass by Simon Clist, Green raced into the penalty area and went down after slight contact by Terrell Forbes, but the ref adjudged, probably correctly, that Green had lost his footing.

Batt was booked after he arrived fractionally late when he and Yeovil left back Nathan Jones both challenged for an aerial ball.

Luke Foster twice went close to opening the scoring.

The centre back saw a far-post header saved from Dannie Bulman's cross, and moments later directed a glancing header just over from a free-kick by Murray.

Ryan Clarke didn't have a lot to do in the first half, his one real save - and it was a comfortable one - coming when Andy Welsh cut in from the left but screwed his shot, and it lacked power.

Ryan Mason tested Clarke with a 25-yard drive at the start of the second half, but after that Oxford turned up the heat.

They kept Yeovil pegged back in their own half, and it came as no surprise when Midson, who was involved in Histon's great FA Cup run last season, put the home side in front.

Keran Murtagh was then booked for bringing down Damian Batt in full flow.

Clarke was still having little to do, thanks to the excellent defending of those in front, but with just over 20 minutes to go, Wilder added an extra defender to bolster his team, taking off goalscorer Midson and sending on Rangers loanee Ross Perry.

Yeovil had a brief spell of pressure with Terrell Forbes shinning a far-post effort wide and Shaun MacDonald having a shot saved.

Then Jon Obika, who had been fairly quiet, directed a glancing header just two yards wide.

Perry was deployed just in front of the back four to break up Yeovil's moves through the middle.

Wales Under 21 international Shaun MacDonald tried a 25-yarder and got everything behind it, but it went straight into the arms of goalkeeper Ryan Clarke.
