TWO Oxfordshire players have received regional accolades at the British Tennis Awards.

Callum West was named young volunteer of the year for the LTA East region, with Jon Maskens scooping the coach prize.

They will now be considered for the national shortlist, with the ceremony taking place at Wimbledon in July.

West, 15, has been a volunteer at Bicester Tennis club for three years.

His coach Bianca Pallett was full of praise for his dedication.

She said: “He has assisted at every open day, summer camp and even completed leadership courses to enable him to do more.

“Callum is dedicated to helping others enjoy the game as such as he does.”

Maskens, a coach at Nuffield Health & Rackets in Oxford, is also the men’s county captain.

He has been coaching for 14 years and loves his job.

Maskens said: “I enjoy working with all abilities and ages from beginners through to internationals – three to 85 years old.

“As a tennis coach I am fortunate to do a job I love everyday as it’s my hobby and passion.”

Meanwhile, Maskens helped North Oxford make the perfect start to their National League South West campaign.

They beat Maidenhead 10-2, with their only blip coming in the doubles.

North Oxford also won by the same scoreline in the Oxfordshire County Division, beating Blewbury.

The club’s under 14 boys were victorious as well, defeating David Lloyd Cardiff 8-4 in the Premier Division of the Team Tennis Junior National League.
