Teenagers were jumping for joy after picking up their GCSE results - setting new records of achievement, just like last week's A Levels.

At Witney's Henry Box School, 232 students took the exams and the pass rate was 99 per cent, with 70 per cent of the grades in the top A* to C levels.

Nicky Edmondson, head teacher, said the results were "fantastic" and "a significant improvement" on last year. She added: "Staff and students richly deserve their success."

A group of eight top achievers said they were all delighted and looked forward to returning next month for sixth form. They are Cathy Campbell, Amy Lockwood, Hannah Cook, Jack Lee, Emma Keen, Adele Curness, Ben Anderson. They all picked up ten or more A* and A grades, as did James Baughan.

Joining her friends to open her results was 16-year-old Claire Musgrave who passed ten subjects, all with A* to C grades. She said: "That's what I wanted and I'm glad I did really well in arts and music. We're going to celebrate - somewhere!"

Imogen Ebanja, 16, was also delighted after picking up eleven passes, all A*, A and B grades. Just as happy was her mum Sarah who said: "She's deserved this, she's worked really hard. I've got two other children at university and now Imogen's doing well. Great."

Wood Green School in Witney had its own "top twenty" of teenagers gaining ten or more A or A* grades.

They are: Alex Bamsey, Jacob Briggs, Sarah Dimond, Callie Green, Lucy Johnson, Harriet Leach, Stewart Long, Kelly Mason, Daniel Tomlinson, Charlotte Warner, Christopher Barker, Vicki Campbell, Joanne Goldby, Rory Hill, Andrew Laithwaite, Euan Long, Megan Maisey, Sasha Senior, Kristine Ventura and Shaun Yates.

The school had 208 students taking exams, with an overall pass rate of 99.6 per cent and 75 per cent getting As or A*s.

Head Cynthia Savage said: "They are our best results ever and we are absolutely delighted. We have 20 children with ten or more A or A stars.

"They are simpy superb scores and a testimony to the hard work of our staff and students."

Teenagers at Carterton Community College broke the school's record by clocking up a 65 per cent pass rate in the top A* to C grades. A total of 154 teenagers took the exams, with an overall 94 per cent pass rate. April Paterson and Adam Kellett were the star achievers.

Carterton does not have a sixth form but one student Aneesa But took an A Level - the school's first - and achieved a B in Spanish.

Head Helen Hipkins said: "They all point towards an outstanding set of results and reflect the hard work of all the students and staff."

Andrew Hamilton, head teacher at Eynsham's Bartholomew School said the results were record-breaking. A total of 179 teenagers took the exams and there was a 99.5 per cent pass rate and 75 per cent gaining top A* to C grades.

"The school has consistently been amongst the highest performing schools in Oxfordshire and these results will secure this position once more," he said.

"They are a true reward for the hard work and positive attitudes shown by all studens in ensuring they made the most of their opportunities at Bartholomew School."

Three students gained 12 A* or A grades - India Smith, Abigail Linton and Ruth Stanforth.

Another six chalked up 11 top grades - Claire Duffell, Louise Kemp, Luke Chippendale, Emma Dvies, Alex Howells and Yasmin Mahmoudi.

A further eight gained ten A or A* grades - Samantha Jackson, Christian Drury, Emily Fisk, Fiona Fletcher, Tom Ford, Charlotte Foulkes, Louise Kemp and Ben Larbalestier.

For the vast majority of students at Chipping Norton School the results were "excellent news", said head Simon Duffy. He added: "We have focused on making sure that students are aware of what they are capable of in each subject and what they have to do to achieve that grade. It is particularly pleasing to see boys doig so well at the top level."

The overall A* to C grade rate was 62 per cent and nearly one fifth of grades were either at top A* or A.

Alistair Falconer Hall gained nine A*s and four A grades, Sam Luney seven A*s and six As, Luke Saunders seven A*s and seven As, Kate Phipps six A*s and five As and Josie Dorling six A*s and four As.

At Cokethorpe school, Ducklington, 94 students took GCSEs and, with a 100 per cent pass rate, 92 per cent achieved A* to C grades.

Head Damian Ettinger said: "We are delighted, but not surprised. The statistics show yet another record-breaking year, which complement last week's record A Level results."

Kathy Haig, head at Burford School, said results were broadly similar to last year, but added: "We are very pleased with the 56.2 per cent of pupils who achieved five A* to C grade,s including English and Maths. This continues to be over ten per cent higher than the national average. Also we have quite a lot outstanding individuals."

Victoria Honour gained ten A* and two more A grades, Sophie Bogdiukiewicz had nine A* and three A grades, Florence Stockley picked up nine A8 and one A grade, Alice Geary five A* and six more A grades, and Jessica Harris achieved four A* and eight A grades. There was a 96 per cent pass rate among students and 61 per cent gained at least five A* to C grades.

At Marlborough School, Woodstock, 163 students took the exams and the pass rate was 99 per cent, with 64 per cent of the grades in the top A* to C levels.

Head Julie Fenn said there some excellent individual successes, including Rebecca Ace with eight A* and A grades, Fay Holland with eleven A* grades and Briony Richardson who chalked up nine A*s and an A grade.

She added that overall "this represents strong performance for the year group".
