Sales of Minis continued to tumble in February. BMW sold 11,583 of the Cowley-built cars, 27.2 per cent fewer than in the same month last year.

Year-to-date figures also show a 30.8 per cent drop compared to the first two months of 2008, at 21,702.

Now Munich-based BMW, owner of the Cowley Mini plant, is hoping that the new Mini Convertible will give sales a boost over the rest of the year. The company said: β€œNew orders for the new open-topped Mini version already look very promising.”

BMW Group overall sold 24.4 per cent fewer cars in February at 80,453, and 24.3 fewer for the year to date at 150,838.

UK new car registrations in February fell 21.9 per cent in February compared to the same month a year ago to 54,359 and registrations of small cars, including the Mini, fell 12.3 per cent to 18,041. β€” according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
