The Bear at Home in North Moreton, between Didcot and Wallingford, has scooped the title of Best Pub in Oxfordshire by the Campaign for Real Ale.

The freehouse has four different ales on tap, including two local brews, which are changed each week.

You'll find West Berks, Loddon, Lovibonds and White Horse brews here as well as reliable old stagers like Timothy Taylor Landlord. (If you're driving, I advise London Hoppit - only 3.5 per cent ABV, but a refreshing microbrewery bitter with Kent Golding hops; it's similar to Brakspear, but benefits from Chiltern hard water).

However, the former 15th century coaching inn, which features low beamed ceilings and character fireplaces, is a decent bet if you're after hearty grub, produced by chefs Adam Robenek and John Speed, and their staff.

Fish is delivered from Cornwall and my tip is so book on Wednesdays, Fridays or Saturdays when the catch is new in.

But look out too for the occasional 'specials', such as curry, barbecue or paella nights.

As for puddings, the pub is fantastic if you like ice cream - it offers a range of Swiss Movenpick flavours that include gingerbread, lemon and elderberry, and fig and fior di latte. Blokes might prefer the regular crumbles.

Expect to pay at least £7.50 for a main course (and £15.95 for the monumental mixed grill - 4oz rump steak, fried egg, 6oz burger, sausage, chicken, mushrooms, onions, grilled tomato and home made chips); desserts are £3.95.
