Tim Hobden discovers that former Supergrass man Gaz Coombes has, most definitely, still got it
For all the bands which have littered the Oxford scene over the years, Gaz is still King of Cowley Road.
His show at the O2 Academy Oxford's Zodiac Room on May 4, was a reminder to the host of pretenders to up their game.
We still get a flavour of the sprightly pop which made Supergrass a staple of Britpop and beyond.
A couple of golden oldies are spruced up and rolled out with Richard III and Moving sounding fresh as ever.
But we are not ushered into a comfortable flashback corner. The hour-long set mainly draws from Gaz’s new material.
White Noise bobs along nicely and on Hot Fruit Gaz goes back up the gears to rollicking effect. Debut album Here Come the Bombs served up plenty of signs pointing in the right direction.
And the passion, it’s still there in hefty doses, with a raw energy which still packs a punch.
All hail Gaz, yes, very much, still the King of Cowley Road.
