Sir – What an excellent letter from Hugh Jaeger promoting the cause of a sensible, clean tram system for Oxford (November 1).

I have just returned from Freiburg which he mentions and was mightily impressed not only by the tram system but also the cycle lanes, which unlike ours do not lead cyclists to danger areas — eg the drop-off into racing motor vehicles coming west down London Road at the traffic lights, or the incredible lane that commences in the middle of the road along The Slade by the bus stop. There are numerous other examples. Our councillors have for too long failed miserably to get Oxford the transport system this historic city deserves, it is about time they had their heads knocked together and took action that we the taxpayers want. Incredibly and contrary to my criticism, in the same issue, John Tanner writes sensibly supporting the long overdue Oxford-Marylebone rail link — well written John!
