Sir – Mr Chivers’ recommendations as to how motorists can drive safely (November 1), in response to my earlier tips for cyclists, are commendable. Indeed, I think they could go further. Drivers: l Do not drive through red lights — especially if pedestrians (or a cyclist) are crossing at them l Do not drive the wrong way up one-way streets, and . . .
- Do not drive at all on streets where no traffic is allowed (eg Cornmarket) l Keep at least one hand on the steering wheel
- Do not drive on the pavement when the road is available next to it — it’s dangerous for pedestrians
- If out in your car with a friend in their car, do not drive along in parallel chatting through open windows and oblivious to all other traffic
- Do not use a mobile phone when driving and the old favourite . . .
- Put on your lights if it is dark or misty.
I very much fear, drivers, that if you do not obey these rather tedious rules, the police will be within their rights in arresting you.
