LOUIS VUITTON luggage sets, Chanel dresses and ball gowns by Ralph Lauren all went under the hammer yesterday in Kidlington.

More than 2,000 items – part of the estate of a woman from north London – were sold at Bonham’s auction house in Banbury Road.

The clothes went for £158,280 while the woman’s jewellery raised a further £131,8120 – a total of £290,100.

It was one of the largest single-vendor sales the auction house has ever undertaken.

Michael Welch was one of four auctioneers taking it in turns to step up to the rostrum throughout the day.

He said: “It is a complete one-off for Bonhams. We usually sell antiques and fine art.

“This woman had a compulsive buying disorder or something, most of the garments were unworn. There were even two dresses we actually had to collect from the designers which she had ordered before she died.”

A lot of four Chanel wool jackets sold for £1,200, a 900ml bottle of Chanel perfume went for £700, and scarves by Hermès sold for £100 each.

Most of the garments were sold in lots rather than individually.

The woman, who has not been named, was 61 when she died.
