Staff and customers at the admirable Florio’s restaurant in Summertown became ‘Mo Bros’ by growing fine moustaches in support of Movember, the campaign to raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancer.

As one who has shaved his upper lip just once in 40 years, I was deemed suitable to pass judgment on the resulting whiskers as November drew to its close on Friday.

Those sported by Florio’s owner Ross Buchanan were themselves long and luxuriant enough to qualify for the prize — but this hardly seemed in the spirit of the thing.

I was minded to award the bottle of champagne to the tall and elegant Tom Lloyd-Jones whose well-trimmed growth reminded me (as P. G. Wodehouse’s Jeeves once put it) “of a dark stain like mulligatawny soup”. But he left just before the judging.

In the end, a deserving winner was found in barman Tom Laws-Campbell. As may be seen from the picture above, his arresting hairstyle, eyebrows and moustache together supply a casebook example of artistic unity.
