NO-ONE was sure whether the village name was spelt with one ‘t’ or two. So when Richard Fyson carved a new village sign in 1982, he played safe and spelt it with one ‘t’ on one side and with two on the other. The village had opted for Kencot in a parish vote, but Mr Fyson decided to take a diplomatic approach.
Mr Fyson was a busy man in the village. The middle picture, taken in 1962, shows him with an oak altar he had created for the village church.
The bottom picture dates from 1988 when villagers opened their gardens to the public. Sonia Patrick, who opened her two-acre garden at Kencot House, is seen beneath a 13th century carved archway, featuring clematis, honeysuckle, vines and roses.
