NEARLY 900 homes may soon be built on land north of Banbury.

The major development on either side of Southam Road will feature 880 houses as well as a school, shops and a care home.

Two separate planning applications have been submitted to Cherwell District Council by development company Pandora Ltd.

On the west side of Southam Road there will be 370 houses while on the east there will be 510 plus the school. Both sites have been earmarked in Cherwell District Council’s development strategy which will create 16,000 homes by 2031.

The local plan, which has not yet been approved by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, earmarks sites for major development around the district over the coming years.

According to the proposed local plan the 43-hectare site south of the M40 on either side of Southam Road will need to provide a primary school and a community hall.

District councillor Michael Gibbard, lead member for planning, said: “The district needs housing and that includes Banbury and Bicester probably taking the greater share of that, as much on sustainability grounds as anything else.”

No date has been set for a decision.
