IT WAS a brave person who ventured out when Cowley car workers were leaving the factory.

The roads would be a sea of bicycles as the men poured out of the factory gates and headed home.

There was no chance of keeping them to their side of the road – they filled it from one pavement to the other!

Other traffic was often brought to a standstill, with cycles filling almost every inch of space.

The picture on the right was taken in 1960 in what looks like Oxford Road, Cowley.
