A DECISION on a controversial housing scheme backed by Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud has been postponed for a month.

Oxford City Council has deferred a decision on the three proposals for 108 homes in Cowley and Northway after a flood of late comments.

A decision on whether to grant planning permission will be taken in a month’s time rather than tonight.

City council spokesman Louisa Dean said: “The planning application has been deferred due to the large volume of third party responses received after the committee report was published.

“The deferral will allow for the reports to be updated and any issues addressed, to assist all parties with representations and discussion at the committee meeting.”

Some residents oppose the schemes, particularly for 40 flats at the demolished Cowley Community Centre site in Barns Road.

Some 472 people objected to the four-storey Cowley plan, for 19 one-bed and 21 two-bed flats. The flats would have no parking spaces.

Martin Tasker, who lives in Boswell Road, said: “They are asset stripping, because Cowley is prime real estate that is worth a lot of money.”

Knolles Road resident Neil Hewitt, 58, said: “It’s a monstrous great thing which will overshadow our properties.”

Boswell Road resident Gavin Wilson said: “It is ridiculous to provide residential accommodation with no parking.”

Eight people objected to plans for 47 homes on the site of closed Northway Community Centre in Maltfield Road and 12 against plans for 21 flats in Westlands Drive.

The planning committee will now make a decision on June 5.
