Sir – John Tanner in his letter on air pollution from traffic (April 11) is clearly trying to give us the impression we have nothing to worry about.

However, deaths, as a result of air pollution from traffic nationally, are reported to be higher than those caused by traffic accidents and obesity combined.

He does not mention that Oxford still remains an Air Quality Management Area because its traffic emissions have exceeded European safety limits in several hotspots as well as St Aldates. Besides the introduction of low-emission buses, he offers us no further solution to this problem.

Personally, I would prefer a more open and frank approach, admitting there are real dangers to our health, an indication of where we are in the most danger within the city, and hopefully some discussion of a more detailed strategy for dealing with this major health hazard of our time.
