FAITH leaders in Oxford have condemned child sexual exploitation as an "abhorrent and wicked crime" following the verdicts issued at the Old Bailey today.
In a joint statement, the Oxford Council of Faiths and civic and community leaders, said their thoughts were with the young people "who have suffered, through no fault of their own and with their families and carers as they provide vital support at such a difficult time".
They added: "We know that in all such cases, it takes great individual courage and strength to speak out and to act as witnesses in court and we are grateful that in doing so they have made the Oxford area a safer place.
"In her report of November 2012, the Children's Commissioner reminded us that contrary to what some may wish to believe, those who exploit children, and the youngsters who suffer, come from every community and section of society right across the UK.
"As community leaders in Oxford we are determined not to allow any individuals or groups whose motivation is to stir-up hatred, to use this case for their own distorted ends. It is not credible to blame a whole co mmunity for the acts of a tiny minority of bad individuals and we will not allow those with an agenda of hate and division to hijack this case.
"All of the faith and community leaders here in the Oxford area have restated their determination to work closely with law enforcement authorities and child safeguarding specialists to help root out the evil of child sexual exploitation from our society".
