HUNDREDS of staff at British Gas Business have completed their move to a brand new headquarters.

More than 600 workers have uprooted from three other buildings on the Oxford Business Park and elsewhere in the country into the state-of-the-art building, which was completed in January.

At a special ceremony, the official opening was performed by Energy Secretary Edward Davey, who also met apprentices.

Mr Davey said: “It’s a great showcase for the work British Gas Business has put in to help businesses become more energy efficient, and reduce their energy costs.”

The Cowley headquarters serves almost 950,000 business sites in the UK.

The company contributes £56m a year to the local economy, according to a report by Oxford Economics.

The 81,740 sq ft premises feature a 200-seater restaurant, 101-space cycle park and the latest green technology, including solar panels and a biomass boiler.

The building was recently put up for sale at £28.9m, and British Gas has taken it on a 17-year lease, paying £1.83m a year in rent.

Stephen Beynon, managing director of British Gas Business, said: “Oxford is an important location for British Gas, bringing together all of our operations to serve business customers.”
