FORMER Cowley car worker Raymond Parsons has shared his memories of the four decades he worked at the car plant.

The 81-year-old who lives in Crescent Road, Cowley, worked at the factory for more than 40 years.

He was among former workers who attended the Morris Motors Centenary Reminiscence Session on Monday.

The grandfather looked through old documents and photographs, and took along a picture of himself with fellow workers at the plant.

He said: “I started working there when I was 14 and I did a number of different jobs over the years.

“At one stage I worked in the trim shop and I ended up as a store operator for Unipart before retiring in 1985.

“There was a good spirit among the workers and this day has brought back a lot of happy memories.”

The session at the Oxfordshire History Centre at St Luke’s Church in Temple Road was one of a number of events to mark the centenary of car-making at the plant.

Museum of Oxford staff member Helen Fountain said: “There was a lot of material for people to look at, including aerial photos of the plant from the 1930s.”

One of the main attractions was a mobile cinema which showed an old film of the car plant. The cinema, based on a 1967 vehicle, has been constructed by Ollie Halls, who is working with Modern Art Oxford in Pembroke Street.

Celebrations throughout the year will include an exhibition at the BMW car plant – where the next reminiscence session will take place on Thursday, May 30, starting at 2pm.
