SIGNED works by surrealist Salvador Dali are on display in Oxford in the first exhibition in the city dedicated to the artist.

Aidan Meller, director of Meller Merceux gallery in High Street, is curating the show featuring 30 works of art by the eccentric genius.

He has spent the past year contacting private owners of the artworks so that he could stage the exhibition, which opened to the public on Saturday – on what would have been Dali’s 109th birthday – and runs until June 18.

Father-of-two Mr Meller, 40, from Witney, said: “There are paintings, etchings, lithographs and sculptures and there are works of art that some people will recognise.

“One of Dali’s most famous works of art is The Persistence of Memory, which features a melting clock.

“He used this symbol in a number of works and we have several different versions.”

All the works of art will be on sale, with prices ranging from £1,000 to £100,000.

The gallery is open 10am to 6pm from Monday to Saturday, and 11am to 5pm on Sunday.
