Our weekly guide to some of the hottest gigs

Rock and roll

  • The Severed Limb
  • The Cellar, Oxford
  • Tomorrow (Friday)
  • Tickets £5 from wegottickets.com

Horrible name, great band; no-one gets a party started like The Severed Limb. Fusing rockabilly and jump blues, with country, Cajun and gypsy rhythms, the South London six-piece sound like Lonnie Donegan wrestling with a punk band in a Louisiana juke joint. Get ready to dance. They are joined on the decks by Oxford’s Count Skylarkin and Johnny Louche who keep things spinning until 3am.

Indie rock

  • Klaxons
  • O2 Academy Oxford
  • Tonight
  • Tickets £12 from ticketweb.co.uk

Keira Knightley’s new husband, James Righton, comes down to earth after his Mediterranean honeymoon, exchanging a five-star hotel in Corsica for a sweaty tour bus with his Klaxons bandmates. And tonight the Mercury Prize-winning nu-rave pioneers bring their cosmic imagery, catchy melodies and dynamic energy to the Cowley Road. Life does not get more glamourous! Don’t forget to scan the crowd for good-looking celebrity mates.

Indie folk

  • Lucy Rose
  • O2 Academy Oxford
  • Tonight
  • Tickets £12 from ticketweb.co.uk

Lucy has had a great time of it since the release of her debut album Like I Used To, selling out gig after gig. And tonight should be no exception. When the Warwickshire songbird played the Gathering Festival in Cowley Road last year, she literally had fans queueing out the door and into the rain, all straining their ears for a chance to hear her. Intimate and honest, her music has the power to melt the coldest of hearts.

Indie rock

  • Catfish & the Bottlemen and Kill Murray
  • O2 Academy Oxford
  • Saturday
  • Tickets £6 ticketweb.co.uk

The latest installment of the O2 Academy’s always-excellent Upstairs nights continues on Saturday, with a truly inspiring line-up.

Headlining are loud Llandudno rockers Catfish & The Bottlemen, whose spiky anthems and sing-a-long chants are sure to make them one of 2013’s must-see bands. They are joined by the equally talented, and hotly tipped Kill Murray (who take their inspiration from the likes of Pavement and Metronomy), Poledo, Yellow Fever and The Scholars.

Pop

The band formerly known as Little Fish complete their transformation into their sleek, chic, alter-ego Candy Says with their first Oxford headline show. And it’s in a church. Juju, Ben, Mike and Lisa play arty, sexy Velvet Underground-style pop-rock with cymbal clashes and other percussive flourishes – overseen by Candy, a slender dress shop mannequin. The show follows the release of their single Favourite Flavour this Monday. The band also play a free set at the Truck Store in Cowley Road, at 6pm tomorrow.
