Picture 1 Members of the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service held a party to mark their 20th anniversary in 1986. The branch had 65 volunteers who made sure elderly people in the area received their meals on wheels. At that time, they delivered hot meals twice a week to 28 people in Charlbury, Chadlington, Finstock, Stonesfield, Ditchley and Chilson. Pictured left to right are the Duchess of Leinster, Mildred Ring, Flo Griffin, Elizabeth Butler, Dorothy Bolton, Jean Datson and Eleanor Judge.

Picture 2 Pensioner David Brooks, who hadn’t ridden a bike for 15 years, got in the saddle again in 1982 to join a sponsored ride for charity. He was one of a team of five regulars at the White Hart Inn who took part. They raised £400 to buy Christmas gifts for patients at Bradwell Grove Hospital at Burford. It took Mr Brooks 75 minutes to complete the 12-mile course. In the picture, the five riders from the pub are seen heading off to cheers.

Picture 3 After a wet spell in 1985, the organisers of Charlbury Street Fair set up stalls indoors in the Spendlove Centre. Thankfully, the rain held off and other events went ahead outside as usual, including morris dancing and a display by drum majorettes. In the evening, villagers watched a parade of floats depicting Thomas the Tank Engine, the Wizard of Oz and the 6.5 Special. Above, Andrew Black, two, and his father David look at a 1912 Amanco engine used for deep well pumping.
