ANYONE who has sat and seethed in one of Headington’s legendary traffic jams should welcome yesterday’s announcement of new bus routes for the area.

The aim of the £1.5m scheme is to provide a fast, dedicated service from two park-and-ride locations for the thousands of workers and students using the hospital and university sites in the area.

Logic dictates that, as long as the service passes muster, fewer of them will be tempted to use their cars, clogging up not only the roads but parking spaces.

This will not turn Headington into a traffic-free paradise overnight. But it is a step in the right direction.

For the sake of long-suffering residents, commuters and workers, we are rooting for it to succeed.
