A MAN who described himself as an “experienced criminal” denied committing a knife-point robbery and said whoever did it “didn’t have a clue”.

Eamonn Anderson, of Salter Close, Oxford, is charged with one count of attempted robbery and one count of possession of an offensive weapon.

The 53-year-old was arrested following an incident at the Westgate Shop, which adjoins the Westgate Hotel on March 17.

A jury in Oxford Crown Court watched CCTV footage of a hooded person entering the store and attempting to break into the till and safe.

The store’s shop assistant picked the defendant out of a police line-up, but said he could only be 70 per cent sure it was him.

Giving evidence yesterday Anderson said whoever carried out the robbery made obvious mistakes – such as not covering his face and wearing only one glove.

He also admitted being an “experienced criminal” and having previous convictions but said he had given up the habit.

Answering questions from Joanna Durber, prosecuting, he said: “The fact my DNA and fingerprints weren’t found at the scene proves that I didn’t commit that crime.

“It has been a very long time since I have committed a robbery.

“I don’t do it these days because its not worth it anymore. The security is much better.”

The trial continues.
