Sir – Several readers have demanded that two storeys be taken off the top of the new university accommodation beside Port Meadow, although this would not reveal anything much which could not be seen before.
I would like to take two storeys off the top of the redbrick Victorian building on the corner of Cornmarket and St Michael Street. There is no doubt at all that this hides the picturesque view of St Michael’s Church from St Michael Street, which can be admired in old prints.
Perhaps it could be entirely redeveloped with a more sympathetic two-storey building, and the loss of space compensated by a generous basement. Excavating that carefully would no doubt reveal some very interesting archaeological material.
I am under no illusion that this will be done soon, but it’s worth bearing in mind, if the city council is interested in the appearance and history of the city at all.
