THE article (Oxford Mail, September 24) about the long-term ambition of the city council to restore the canal terminal on the Worcester Street car park site unfortunately gave a misleading impression of the possible project.

The artist’s impression of a new lake on the site was never the intention; rather that new building around a restored terminal would provide opportunities for commercial development with perhaps a hotel, waterside restaurants and public open space which would be economically viable and offer a much- improved welcome to the city from the west.

The city’s West End Area Action Plan gives this as the preferred option for the site and specifies that ‘appropriate alternative public car parking’ would have to be provided.

However, the site belongs to Nuffield College and at present they have no plans to develop it. In the same edition of the Oxford Mail you describe the very exciting Oxford Canal Heritage Project, with public meetings planned to explain it and ask for community involvement.

The meetings are at St Margaret’s Institute on October 1 at 7.30pm, in Wolvercote village hall on October 2 at 6.30pm and in Jericho Community Centre on October 7 at 7.30pm.

I hope that many people will be able to get to one of these meetings.
