A FORMER world heavyweight boxing champion visited an Oxfordshire boxing club to pass on his experience in the ring.
Tim Witherspoon became World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight champion in 1986 and went on to defeat challenger Frank Bruno in a WBA heavyweight title fight the same year. On Saturday, the American called in at South Moreton Boxing Club near Didcot to pass on his advice. After a brief talk, he stepped into the ring to give some one-on-one coaching.
Boxing coach Terry Russell, 21, who sparred with the former champion, said: “A lot of boxers tend to move around the ring a lot, but he is so relaxed and so smooth.
“I tried to put some pressure on him and push him back, but he dealt with everything in his stride, he makes it all look so easy.”
The club has about 250 members.
