I HAVE just read the review written by Katherine MacAlister, regarding Annie’s tea rooms at Thrupp (October 3). I agree with her description of the area, but do think that she has not fairly reviewed Annie’s tea rooms.
I travel to Oxford regularly and spend my holidays there. I always make sure I have time to go to Annie’s. I agree that there are often queues of people waiting to be served. These queues often have regulars in (who probably wish they didn’t have to queue) but they grin and bear it, as they know the food served is worth waiting for.
I am intrigued that Ms MacAlister thinks that the “enormously loyal clientele” would put up with “bland and uninspiring” food. I think it is an insult to the many regulars who enjoy the food.
Over the years, I have eaten in many different establishments and if I feel something is not right (in my opinion) I would mention it to the owner or manager, and have done so on several occasions.
Many different types of people eat and drink at Annie’s, not just the “mixed crowd of mothers and older clientele”. As for the quiche, I often take some home with me as it is delicious. Annie’s tea rooms will cater for special diets and has recently won awards for their catering – in my humble opinion well-deserved.
