A VOLUNTEER ambulance worker sacked for speeding on his way to a call-out has been told his case will be “reappraised”.
Godfrey Smith was told he was no longer needed after 15 years as a community first responder after doing 33mph in a 20mph zone in Oxford in July.
The Faringdon resident was on his way to help a man in St Clement’s with breathing difficulties.
He said he thought he was in a 30mph zone because that limit was shown on the sat nav provided by South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS).
Mr Smith, 64, was also censured for driving the wrong way around a bollard, at the junction of Longwall Street heading towards St Clements.
Now SCAS said he can retrain and then he will be considered to return to his former post.
He said: “I am over the moon I’ve got a second chance.”
Service chief executive Will Hancock said: “In response to an appeal by Mr Smith we have undertaken a review of the process and decisions that were taken.
“In recognition of his valued service Mr Smith has given the trust and local community over a number of years we have agreed a process of retraining and reassessment with him.”
