Sir - I was interested to read your editorial comment on the A34 (December 15). The A34 is the Government's responsibility.
The county council has won some money to help with access to Oxford and this will include the A34 interchanges to the city.
However, the overall problem remains unresolved. The road is a major freight route from the southern coast ports to the Midlands. It should be getting more priority from Government than currently.
In unison with our counterparts at other councils in the South East we will not let this issue drop. We know that widening the dual carriageway through Oxford would be immensely difficult.
Road pricing would be our least favoured option as, unless there is a national strategy, traffic would simply move on to more inappropriate roads and create an unacceptable rat-run mentality. A straightforward recognition of the problems and clarity in terms of potential solutions from Government would be helpful. At least then we would all know the parameters we are working within. The message to Government is 'get on with it'.
