A BID by coffee chain Costa for continental-style tables outside its Market Square outlet in Wantage has proved not to the town council’s taste.

The coffee chain has applied to Vale of White Horse District Council for permission to put four tables and 12 chairs outside its cafe.

But Wantage Town Council, which owns the area of cobbles Costa wants to use, says it will not allow it.

Council clerk Bill Falkenau wrote to the Vale: “The proposal is on private property owned by the town council and not public highway.

“There is an established right of way for occupants of the property at the rear of the Costa Coffee shop.

“This proposal would block that right of way and oblige those using this building to divert across the forecourt area.”

He added: “Whilst the town council would like to see street cafes in the town, this is not a suitable location.

“It is adjacent to the main bus stop in the town centre and would be adversely affected by the buses and their users.

“The town council would not intend to give its permission for the tables to be located on its property.”

The Vale is due to make a decision on the plan on January 17.

Can't think of anywhere else that would be appropriate, seems to work when market sets up there, how about a temporary licence?
