George Street closure to affect the buses

George Street will shut for a month

George Street will shut for a month

First published in News

A ROAD in central Oxford will shut for about a month from tomorrow with about four weeks of disruption to follow.

Oxfordshire County Council agreed to close George Street so ISG Construction Ltd can carry out work to a building.

The street will be closed between Cornmarket and Victoria Court for about four weeks. There will then be one-way traffic only for about six weeks.

Bus services will be re-routed via Beaumont Street, where parking will be suspended to allow for temporary stops.

Stagecoach Oxfordshire said six of its bus routes will be affected by the closure, the S1, S2, S3, 14, 17 and 18.

These will divert and pick up and set down passengers in Beaumont Street while George Street is closed. It means planned improvements to the S1, S2 and S3 services from June 1 are on hold.

Oxford Bus Company has said Pear Tree and Redbridge services will terminate in the city centre and not stop in New Road.

Parking will be removed from the St Giles end of Beaumont Street to make way for temporary bus stops.

Emergency vehicles and pedestrians will have access.

This is going to be an interesting test to see if it is possible to close George Street to traffic permanently

George St, at the top end, handles 4-6 buses an hour in each direction, and a handful of delivery vans.

The 'chaos' in the area is the hundreds of vehicles an hour using the parallel Beaumont St as a through route, choking it. Adding a few vans to this (the buses will split route) can't cause that much trouble can it?

300 - 4 pbh, rising to 6 on Sat
14 - 2 bph
17 - 1 bph

Alright so that's 9 bph max. Anything else, eg X5, starts at Gloucester Green so will have to start at Magdalen St or the Taylorian for the duration. This is inconvenient but not fatally so.

Add to that S1, S2, S3, 18, National Express services. The numbers then need doubling as what ever goes up George Street eventually needs to come back down. So in the grand sxheme of things a lot of buses pass up and down every hour.

Terminate anything that comes from the Botley Rd at Gloucester green, and anything that comes down St Giles at Magdalen St. I don't deny it's inconvenient but it is not insurmountable. THere are far greater constrictions on our abilities to run a bus network the city needs than this closure.
