I WOULD be happy if Temple Cowley Pool, pictured, did only use energy equivalent to 180 tons of CO2 a year, as Nigel Gibson claims (June 3). Regrettably the pool would still not be financially sustainable for Oxford’s public funds but at least it wouldn’t be doing as much harm to the environment.

Unfortunately the true figure for 2013-14 is 741 tons of CO2. Hard work by council officers and Fusion has got this down from just over 900 tons in 2009-10 but the maintenance is very expensive and the pool is still extremely inefficient by modern environmental standards.

Temple Cowley pool

The replacement pool will greatly reduce the council’s carbon footprint as well as providing a first-class leisure centre for the east of the city for the first time which will be sustainable for the long-term future.

An impartial decision will be made on the future of the Temple Cowley site based on best value for all the people of Oxford. Separately the council has also committed £500,000 toward new leisure facilities in Temple Cowley.
