City residents can today celebrate 200 years of peace with France.
The date, June 27, is a commemorated on two “peace stones” in the city, one in Carfax Tower and one at the plain roundabout.
They were carved on that date in 1814 to proclaim a short-lived peace proclaimed with France when Napoleon was imprisoned on Elba.
Minutes from a city council meeting in 1814 show that a procession of dignitaries laid other Napoleonic Wars peace stones at the four historic entrances to the city.
