U’s Michael Collins joins Woodstock pupils on walk to promote exercise
8:30am Thursday 17th July 2014 in News
OXFORD United players joined pupils in a football-themed walking bus through Woodstock yesterday morning.
A record 190 children, parents and teachers from Woodstock Primary School, in Shipton Road, walked through the town to promote healthy exercise.
They set off from Woodstock Library in Hensington Road and travelled half a mile.
Many pupils wore football shirts and talked to the U’s new signing Michael Collins, who joined on Tuesday from Scunthorpe United, and defender Tom Newey.
Midfielder Collins, below, who had played in a friendly against Oxford City the previous night, said: “It’s a good way for kids to interact and a lot more fun than jumping in the car every morning to get dropped off at school.
“It’s something that should have been done years ago and we were happy to support it. There were quite a few kids who follow Oxford United, although there were a lot more Manchester United and Arsenal fans.”
Headteacher Lisa Rowe said: “We obviously recognise the health and environmental benefits, but it also provides a lovely social start to the morning for everyone taking part.”
