A RARE bronze Iron Age mirror found near Didcot is closer to becoming a permanent fixture after Oxfordshire County Council raised £25,000 towards keeping it in the county.

The authority now has until September 12 to raise the final £8,000 needed to buy the mirror, which dates back to the first century BC and is one of only 18 to exist.

Of the money raised, the Victoria and Albert Museum gave £10,000, a further £10,000 is expected from various grants and the Friends of the Oxfordshire Museum have collected over £5,000.

It was found near Didcot by someone with a metal detector sometime before 2007 and has been in private hands ever since.

Carol Anderson, director of the Oxfordshire Museum, said: “If we could get one final push to raise the £8,000 needed to purchase the mirror it would be a great asset to the museum’s collection.”
