DRIVERS who use the A34 in Oxfordshire are breathing a sigh of relief now roadworks have almost been completed - two weeks ahead of schedule.

But there will still be restrictions as night time working continues this week.

Last Thursday the southbound lane restriction was removed and the northbound lane closure was switched over from lane two to lane one.

On Saturday the northbound single lane restriction was also removed. Night-time works will continue both northbound and southbound until Friday.

The £3m re-building and re-surfacing work began on January 15 and was due to have taken ten weeks.

But contractors helped by largely good weather conditions and working at night finished most of the the project ahead of schedule.

The Highways Agency, which is responsible for the £3m scheme, said the three-mile stretch of road between Chilton and West Ilsley needed to be completely rebuilt.

It said the new surface would provide a smoother ride for the 69,000 vehicles that use that section of the A34 each day.
