DRAMATIC demolition continues at the Westgate development as construction workers slowly tear down the multi-storey car park.

Building work at the site began in late February as part of the £440m redevelopment of the shopping centre.

The existing mall building off Bonn Square will be refurbished and there will be two more shopping buildings constructed, along with an underground car park. Developer Westgate Oxford Alliance is set to finish construction in Autumn 2017.

The new centre, given final planning approval in November, is expected to create about 3,400 jobs.

It will have a new John Lewis store, 100 other shops and a five-screen cinema.

The stores currently in the centre will not be closing during the work.

The multi-storey car park was first opened to customers in 1974 and a temporary car park has been set up on the other side of Oxpens Road until the redevelopment is finished.
