THE people of Headington Quarry are one step closer to getting a new pavilion after years of campaigning.

The final designs for the recreation ground have been revealed and plans are to be submitted to Oxford City Council in the autumn.

Residents can see how their views influenced the sports pavilion designs after the public consultation results were published last month.

The £1.2m scheme will see the demolition of the current pavilion and construction of a new building, which will include changing rooms, toilets and store rooms, along with a community space and kitchen.

City councillor for Quarry and Risinghurst Dee Sinclair campaigned for 13 years with residents to revamp the recreation ground in Margaret Road.

The former Lord Mayor said: “I think that it was very important that we listened to the residents and took on board what they wanted.

“We have made the appropriate changes to the location of the pavilion and also the concern about the level of parking.

“We are really excited about it. It’s been a long time and it should go to planning committee shortly.”

Public consultation on the plans took place in March and April and the views which were expressed have been used to shape the latest design.

The major change to the scheme following consultation is that the proposed pavilion has now been moved back to the site of the existing pavilion.

Mrs Sinclair added: “The pavilion will be similar to the one in Grandpont in regards to size and design.

“If all goes to plan it will hopefully all be done by next year.”

The work is funded by Oxford City Council and is part of its citywide pavilion modernisation project.

Children’s football team Quarry Rovers is the main user of the building.

The team has played on the Margaret Road Recreation Ground since the club was established in 1952.
