THE first students to embark on courses at the new Technology Campus in Blackbird Leys got a sneak peak at the facilities ahead of its opening next month.

The £8m site, part of City of Oxford College, will offer state-of-the-art workshops and teaching spaces for students on engineering, electronics and mechanical courses.

On Tuesday, August 23, a group of young people due to start or continue courses in September were shown around the technology hub in Cuddesdon Way.

Callum Underwood, 17, who will complete his Engineering Level 3 Extended Diploma next year, said: "I can see the facilities are much better than before.

"Everything looks much more modern. The technology is better and we will be able to do more of the practical aspects of engineering."

A large L-shaped building is the main new addition, with a huge workshop full of moveable equipment for up to 50 students to use bigger machines such as lathes.

The CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) workshop is also complete, as is the centre's main teaching hub and laboratories elsewhere.

Tahir Ali 18, is also returning to complete the second year of his Engineering Level 3 Extended Diploma in September.

He said: "The new campus has much better facilities. The equipment is more modern and I am looking forward to using it.

"It will help me get ready for my next step, which is to study electrical engineering at university."

The campus was originally set to be named the Centre for Technology, Innovation and Skills but was shortened at the eleventh hour to Technology Campus.

It aims to address the country's growing need for students with STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) skills by creating 60 new apprenticeship places and 60 full-time programme places.

Employers including Beard Construction, Land Securities and Skanska will also help shape the curriculum and create live projects for students to work on.

John Kelly, director for the technology faculty at providers Activate Learning, said: "The new centre will offer students access to the latest facilities and the opportunity to learn in a smart, contemporary environment.

"By working closely with local employers it will also give them an understanding of the realities of working in industry and experiences which will prepare them for future careers in local growth industries."
