THEATRE designer Tom Piper called in at his old school to install 50 ceramic poppies from the Tower of London.

Mr Piper, a former pupil of Magdalen College School, worked with ceramic artist Paul Cummins in 2014 on the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red installation at the Tower.

The display consisted of 888,246 ceramic poppies as a commemoration of the centenary of the First World War and filled the tower's moat between July and November 2014.

Mr Piper installed 50 of the poppies in the dining hall at the school in East Oxford on Tuesday to honour the 50 pupils who died in the First World War.

A dedication ceremony was attended by parents, former pupils, and other supporters of the school in Cowley Place.

Mr Piper said he found the ceremony 'very moving' and enjoyed spending the day back at his old school.

Teacher Dr David Bebbington, whose book Mister Brownrigg's Boys: Magdalen College School and the Great War examines the life stories of the pupils who died, also spoke at the ceremony.

Mr Piper was awarded the MBE last year for services to theatre and First World War commemorations.
