A new name has been added to the Oxford United squad list for the rest of the season - that of terminally-ill lifelong fan Steve Dyer.

Mr Dyer will be the club's 12th man, featuring on the official team list and match programme at every game between now and the end of the season.

The 60-year-old was moved to a hospice in America on Friday and his wife Carol said he may not have much longer to live.

The father-of-three was diagnosed with bladder cancer and given four months to live in November 2015 but made the 3,200-mile round trip from his home in New Hampshire to Wembley last year.

He was able to take his son Steven, 22, to a game just like his father Richard, who worked in the Cowley car factory, took him back in 1963.

On returning to the Kassam Stadium in September he praised U's fans for 'keeping him alive' through their support.

After his admission to a hospice on Friday Darryl Eales dedicated United's win over Peterborough on Saturday to the Oxford-born man who responded with his own video message.

This morning the club took the unprecedented move of adding Mr Dyer to the team sheet as the number 12 until the end of the campaign.

Chairman Darryl Eales said: "It is a story that has touched everyone.

"Steve is such a positive person and is fighting so hard.

"He is part of the club and we want to show him that he is in our thoughts every week, he will be our 12th man for the rest of the season.”
