AN ADVENTURER and storyteller visited a Witney school to talk to students about his experiences travelling the world.

Leon McCarron dropped into Wood Green School earlier this month and gave a talk on his trek from Mongolia to Hong Kong.

The filmmaker and author, who specialises in long-distance expeditions and is a fellow of the Royal Geography Society, spoke as part of the school’s new lecture series.

Mr McCarron gave two talks at the school titled ‘On Foot Across China’.

The lectures covered his six-month walk from Mongolia to Hong Kong – crossing the Gobi Desert in temperatures of -30C, following the frozen Yellow River, camping in the shadow of the Great Wall and surviving and thriving in China.

During the journey, the Northern Irish explorer travelled the distance of a marathon each day for six days a week, all while carrying a pack weighing 30kg.

Students at the school described the talk as inspirational and educational, encouraging them to reflect on perseverance, risk-taking and opportunity.

Other adventures tackled by Mr McCarron have included a 1,000 mile walk through the Middle East, a bicycle journey through North America and crossing the Argentine Patagonia on horseback.
