A GRADE II listed building in Abingdon could become a pizza takeaway if a plan is approved.

Papa John’s wants to open up at 7, The Square, and has submitted a proposal to Vale of White Horse District Council.

The building has previously been used as a fish and chip shop but Papa John’s proposes internal and external alterations to it when it moves in.

It was first listed on Historic England’s National Heritage List for England in December 1971. The stone house probably dates back to the 18th century, according to experts.

A flue outside the property will be retained and a fresh air intake grill will be replaced with an anodised aluminium louvre. That will be fixed to the building in the same location as the existing grill.

The front of the building will be refurbished and is designed to ‘be in keeping with the existing building’.

Owen Pike, an associate at Sanderson Weatherall, which is working on the plan for Papa John’s, stated in documents sent to Vale of White Horse District Council: “Given that the new shop front will improve the appearance of the building, there will be no additional impact on the conservation area, existing plant and equipment on the exterior of the building will be reused and there will be less odour nuisance, it is considered that the proposed development should be supported.”

The application will be decided later.
