MORE THAN 30 motorists will soon receive warning letters following more police speed checks in Cowley.

A new community-led operation was launched this month following a speedwatch programme set up last year.

In November, motorists caught going too quickly were sent warning letters from police, with 15 handed out to irresponsible drivers who were spotted going anywhere from 36mph to 50mph along 30mph streets.

The areas checked were Oxford Road, Garsington Road, Rymers Lane/Cricket road, Littlehay Road and Marsh Road.

City councillor David Henwood, who has been working with police on the initiative, confirmed earlier this month that fresh checks would be carried out in January and February.

The first of these was held on Wednesday, when more than 30 drivers were caught by police, with the help of local volunteers, going too fast.

Further checks will be carried out on Friday, February 2, and Saturday, February 3, both from 8am until 5pm.

Locations for monitoring speed will be selected from sites suggested by the community, which will be then risk assessed by the police.

Volunteers who want to get involved and are able to make any of the above dates are asked to contact PCSO James Gordon on 07800702975 with preferred times.

Those found speeding will receive two warning letters before possibly facing a fine.
