MORE Oxford MPs have backed a campaign to change preconceptions about people who live in social housing.

MP for Oxford East Anneliese Dodds and MP for Oxford West and Abingdon Layla Moran are the latest to pledge their support to the 'Benefit to Society' campaign.

They join others including MP for Wantage, Ed Vaizey, MP for Henley John Howell and MP for Witney Robert Courts to back the initiative, organised by tenants.

The campaign was launched in parliament last week and is supported by the county's biggest social housing provider, Soha.

It comes after 91 per cent of residents of social housing felt they were portrayed negatively by the media and wider society.

A report commissioned to support the campaign found 'a huge gap' between perception and reality

Campaigners are calling on politicians to actively challenge stereotypes and end the stigma surrounding the issue.

Housing Minister Dominic Raab and Shadow Housing Minister Melanie Onn are among the other politicians to have expressed their support.

Carole Burchett, a retired Senior Archives Assistant for the BBC who lives in a Soha Housing property, said: “I can’t understand why it’s acceptable for the media and politicians to present tenants as constantly taking something from society.

"It’s just not true. I’ve worked all my life and always lived in social housing with all kinds of different people. Many are working, retired or volunteers and many others are caring for loved ones."
