Wantage and Grove residents have expressed an interest in starting a local silent book group, with provisional plans underway to make this a reality.

Posting anonymously in the Wantage and Grove Community Facebook group last week, a local resident shared a screenshot from a post that had gone viral in which another social media user shared pictures of their attendance at a silent book group.

In the caption to the post, the author wrote: “Does anyone know if there is anything local like this? And if there isn’t would anyone be interested in something like it?!

Members of a group typically catch up and then read their books in silence in each session.

The post was met with tens of positive comments in support of the idea.

Wantage Library then expressed interest in helping to make the idea a reality. A representative responded saying: “We would consider setting one up at the library if there were enough people – once a month on Monday evening from 7pm – 8pm – free tea and coffee.”

The library also asked those interested residents to email them as staff explore arrangements for starting a group.

The author of the original post said: “I am also going to contact a couple of local business venues about maybe having another option once a month on a different night alongside the library night for those who can’t make that one.

“It’s good to support local services and business, watch this space.”

Wantage Library has been contacted for further comment.
