A jealous ex-boyfriend who tried to kill the man he wrongly thought was his former partner's new lover was yesterday convicted of attempted murder.

Ian Holland, 33, spied on his ex-girlfriend Lisa Cebral having a late-night cup of tea with Adam Dickson.

He then followed Mr Dickson back to his parents' home in Margaret Road, Adderbury, and attacked him.

During the seven-day trial at Oxford Crown Court, the jury heard Holland left Mr Dickson lying unconscious on the driveway in a pool of blood after the attack at about 3.15am on June 17 last year.

The jury took more than seven hours to find Holland, of Edinburgh Way, Banbury, guilty of attempted murder by a majority of 10 to 1.

Holland had denied the charge and claimed he was in Banbury at the time of the attack.

The court heard Holland watched Miss Cebral, the mother of his daughter, through the window of her home in King's Sutton as she chatted with Mr Dickson after he had given her a lift back from a night out in Banbury.

Mr Dickson's parents Roy and Janet wept as the verdict was read out.

They said Mr Dickson, a computer programmer who gave evidence earlier in the trial, had not wanted to be in court for the verdict.

Judge Anthony King remanded Holland in custody and ordered him to return to the court for sentencing on Tuesday, August 26.
