Harpists, magicians and belly dancers will be among the finalists of a talent contest to prove that Abingdon residents really have got what it takes to be a showbiz star.

The final round of Abingdon's Got Talent, organised by Abingdon Town Council, will see 13 finalists compete to take top slot in three age categories.

Thirty hopefuls were whittled down to the last 13 during the first round of the contest in the town last month.

Among the acts to make it through were a belly dancing trio, a hip-hop freestyle dancing act, a child harpist, a trumpet player and a number of singers.

Singer Aurore Lacote, 15, will be competing in the 12 to 17 category.

She said: "I'm really excited about the final. The competition is really tough but I feel confident with the song I have chosen.

"My family are coming to watch me and cheer me on so we've all got our fingers crossed."

The final, which will be held in Abingdon Market Place on Saturday from 11am, will be judged by Abingdon town councillor Patrick Lonergan, Geraldine Peers of the BBC South news programme, Mary Green of ITV Thames Valley news, Eileen Bagshawe of Abingdon Drama Club and Julia Howson, from the Stagecoach Theatre Arts group.

Compering the event will be Paul Mayhew-Archer - co-writer of television comedy The Vicar of Dibley.

Entrants in the three age groups will be competing for prizes donated by the Upper Reaches Hotel in the town - including an overnight stay for two for the winner of the age 18 and over category.

For the age groups 12 to 17, and under 11s, the hotel will lay on a lunch or barbecue to share with friends.

Organiser Marianne Milburn said: "There has been such a lot of interest and the high standard of performance should make the final very interesting indeed.

"The enthusiasm everyone has shown is outstanding.

"One entrant has even cut short her holiday to be able to take her place in the final 13."
