An annual fair which celebrates rural traditions has been cancelled to give the site a rest.

Organisers Wychwood Forest Trust said there will be no Wychwood Forest Fair in 2024.

The habitat restoration charity said: "After three fantastic years at Foxburrow Wood, we are letting the land - and us - take a well-earned rest, but we'll be back!"

The country fair, which is usually held in the ancient Wychwood area on the outskirts of Witney,  features crafts and rural traditions including ferret racing and axe throwing while helping to raise money for conservation projects.

Last year the fair, which was attended by 3,000 people, raised funds towards rewilding Gibbets Close Hill, 50 acres of former livestock farmland, between Eynsham and Witney acquired by the Wychwood Forest Trust in 2022.

Neil Clennell, chief executive at the trust, said: "Where else can you learn about local natural history, join a community group and lend your support to campaigns to clean up our rivers, then take a pony ride, throw a few axes and lose your shirt on a ferret race?"
