Midfielder Simeon Maye has left Banbury United following a seven day approach, the club has confirmed.

The club said they would like to thank him for his "leadership and commitment while being with us".

His stoppage time winner against Tamworth in November moved United to within a point of the Vanarama National League North play-off places.

However, the Puritans now sit 22nd in the league having won just four games all season.

It was Maye's first goal for Banbury and saw them beat the then league leaders in the 97th minute.

The club said: "We tried to hold onto Sim, but he told us he is keen to reduce his travelling.

"All the best Simeon."

Maye joined United on a non-contract basis 12 months ago.

He played for Birmingham City as a youngster before spells at Boldmere St Michaels, Redditch United and Hednesford Town.

In December 2016 he joined National League side Solihull Moors, going on to make 21 appearances in the top level of non-league football in the remainder of that season.

After a loan spell at Rushall Olympic during the 2017/18, Maye joined the Pics on a permanent basis in the summer of 2018.

He played in the National League North with Hereford at the start of season 2019/20 before he moved to Brackley Town in January 2020.

Maye joined Leamington in the following summer.

After suffering a long term leg injury in a Leamington FA Cup game against Kettering Town in September 2021, Maye was out of the game for almost a year but returned to the Leamington side at the start of last season.

He made 22 National League North appearances for the Brakes last season but, after finding game time limited from the start of the calendar year, left the club in February 2023.

Banbury's next game is this Saturday, March 23, against eighth placed Curzon Ashton.

The Puritans arrive on the back of a midweek semi-final cup exit to Kidlington.

Banbury bowed out of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup after a 4-2 defeat on penalties, after the match had finished 1-1.
